The Greek word “adamas” means invincible, and was the perfect way to describe the most coveted gemstone of all time. Because diamonds are not only crazy beautiful, but one of the hardest materials naturally known, it seems as though every culture throughout history has its own folklore involving them. Ancient Hindu legend states that diamonds were creating when lightning struck the earth, while ancient Persian stories claim satan himself produced the first diamonds in attempt to persuade and lure humans into his tricks.

Our favorite old lore about diamonds comes from ancient Roman literature. Cupid, the god of desire, eroticism, and attraction, was the son of Venus and Mars. He’s often described as pesky and youthful (not unlike love itself!), and instead of playing a lead role in the many stores of mythology, he’s often in the background, setting things into motion with his tools. And its those tools that we are especially interested in- his beloved bow and arrows. Legend has it that cupid carried around two types of arrows. One gold, and one lead. If shot with the golden one, you’d immediately and uncontrollably fall in love. The lead one was the only way to adverse the effects of the golden one. The magic of the golden arrow was in its tip, which was made out of diamonds.

Ignoring how much it may hurt to be shot with one with a diamond tip, we’re pretty envious of Cupid’s magical and assumingly really beautiful arrow. The legend of his gold and diamond arrow may be the foundation of associating diamonds with love, something we still do today. Can we just skip the third party and fall in love with the diamond itself?
