The popular heart shape has nothing to do with the actual shape of a human ticker. Rather, it has roots in nature. Two of the earliest depictions come from the 5th century B.C. and show up on two totally different continents. A South Asian plant, the Peepal, boasted heart-shaped leaves while in the west, a heart-shaped seed pod could be found in the Silphium plant, a species of giant fennel. Since these heart shaped elements were portrayed at a time when painting was difficult to do, we can deduce that there is something special about the heart shape that has enamored us from the start.

But you may be wondering how the shape made the jump from famed foliage to the leading symbol of love the world over. The associations likely came about in the Middle Ages when a small, 13th century French painting depicted a kneeling man offering his “heart” to a woman.

This absolute Edwardian stunner features two divine hearts interlocked in love. And if that is not enough to convey the universal message of love, commitment, loyalty, friendship, and romance that they symbolize, we know you'll certainly be in love with those otherworldly cabochon sapphires, entrancingly encased as in halos of perfect diamonds. Not to mention an oh so sophisticated shank denoting overall exceptional craftsmanship.
