One of the many, many reasons we love Georgian and Victorian pieces is the soft romantic glow that they give off. A little moody, a little dreamy, and a little sparkle that’s just the right amount of dazzle. The common factor contributing to these is of course our favorite- rose cut diamonds.

Considered the first sophisticated cut, rose cuts followed point and tables. One day, a lapidarist was polishing and cutting a natural rough diamond, and slivers of it were falling to the floor. He (thankfully!) noticed something interesting in the light, those chips of diamond waste were kind of pretty. More than pretty actually… there were quite stunning. And thus the rose cut was born. The lack of pavilion, creating a bottom surface that is completely flat where the cutter cleaved off the chunk of stone is completely unique to rose cuts. This causes the light to be reflected differently than modern cuts and we think they’re exceptional for their subtle brilliance.

It’s incredible that this gorgeous cut once went unnoticed and was considered waste. It took the world by storm in the 1700s and 1800s, though we think they are pretty timeless even today.
