Nobility. Heraldry. Status. The signet ring has had many identities throughout time.

Signets have been found in the tombs of Ancient Egypt and were an important administrative tool for those running the Roman Empire. Roman signets were originally made of iron and progressed to silver and eventually gold as the empire became wealthier. During the Middle Ages, and well into the Renaissance, signets were used to seal letters. Many had engravings and served as prized family heirlooms.

While practicality reigned, ornamentation did not wither and die. Many rings had snazzy shoulders or floral motifs. A romantic tradition born on the heels of the Renaissance included engraving the initials of a recently married couple on the face of a signet. Signets were popular well into the 18th and 19th centuries, especially because jewelry lovers were enamored of styles that originated during Roman, Greek, and Medieval times.

Many cultures used precious stones, enamel, or other ornamentation but we are total suckers for the standard order smooth, buttery gold signet, like this 18K beauty. She is all yours, the heirloom that dreams are made of.
