While most Victorian designs were imported from across the pond, the Belcher ring is a uniquely American style. It has an eye-catching center stone that is set into the shank of the ring with prongs or claws that are elegantly spaced out.

There are two contrasting tales as to where the name “Belcher” comes from. One school of thought points to jeweler Thomas Belcher, about whom not much is known. But other accounts credit Jim “Jem” Belcher as this ring’s namesake. Jem was a bare knuckle boxing champion from England who rose to fame in the early 1800’s. Known as a fearsome boxer, he was also known for his flashy style and love of all things high society. He supposedly popularized a particular type of men’s scarves, which came to commonly be secured by none other than a Belcher ring, hence the moniker.

Unlike flashy Jem, Belcher-style rings are known for keeping a low profile. This makes for a spectacularly secure stone that does not catch and is not impacted by daily wear. Belcher rings are, therefore, much more likely to be an everyday piece and all but guaranteed to stand the rest of time. This reliable lady sure has. She’s as glorious as she’s ever been and awaiting her next keeper.
