A lot was going on in 1837, when this nearly 200 year old ring was made. In 1837, Michigan became a state, Houston and Chicago were granted city charters, and Martin Van Buren became the eighth president of the United States.

It was a big year in the jewelry world as well. Not only did Tiffany & Co. first open its doors, but on June 20 of that year, an 18-year-old Queen Victoria ascended to the throne following the death of the King, her uncle. She remained on the throne until 1901. This event was consequential to the jewelry world because Queen Victoria was absolutely obsessed with jewelry. She had great taste and the money to acquire almost anything her heart desired. She was the tastemaker of the day, shaping basically every trend over the course of her 63 year reign.

Early on in the Victorian period, she favored sweet pieces, as she was deeply in love with her husband, Prince Albert whom she wed in 1840. Indeed, this early period of the Victorian era was known as the “Romantic Period.” This positively charming emerald and diamond band is a quintessential example of adorable, historic adornment from this time. Each is securely and sweetly held in its own individual starburst setting for a ring that will last well beyond many a royal.
