Nearly 100 million years ago, massive volcanoes peppered the land we now know as Australia. Scientists have found evidence that one of these so-called ‘super-volcanes’ spewed zircon crystals for thousands of miles, covering the prehistoric island. If humans had been alive then, most think that this big time blast could have taken them all out. It’s all about timing.

Australia is home to some absolutely beautiful zircon stones. In 1950, a significant deposit was found on Fraser Island, off the eastern Coast of Australia. By the late 1970’s, sand mining had to come to a halt due to its environmental effects. That is one of the many reasons that we absolutely love rescuing antique stones and jewelry components; these well loved stones are far better for our planet than most modern day mining.

Australia also has the world’s most ancient zircon. In 2014, scientists dated a selection of these stones to find that they were 4.374 billion years old. That is a mind boggling number but not even close to how much we love this perfect pendant.
