Spinels come in many colors, including red, black, blue, green, and purple. We've chosen an unbelievable natural purple spinel for this trilogy ring. Like a breath of spring, this lovely lilac stone is flanked by two cushion cut G VS grade diamonds.

Archaeologists have found red spinel jewelry in Buddhist tombs in Kabul, Afghanistan that date back to 100 B.C. Red spinels were also common in Ancient Rome around this same period. The Romans loved more color varieties than red alone, as evidenced by the blue and green spinel they brought to England around 50 B.C.

Spinel also shows up in the historical record around 1300, when Marco Polo passed close to spinel mines in what was then known as the Badashan Province in modern-day Afghanistan. He remarked on spinels in his writing, mistakenly calling them “Balas Rubies” and describing the process of mining by saying, “people dig great caves underground, just as is done by miners for silver.” Marco Polo noted that the mines were owned by the King and could only be mined on his behalf—on pain of death.
