Trillion cuts most likely emerged in the early 20th century. They were swept into popularity thanks to the geometric-loving esthetics of the Art Deco era in the 1920s and 30s. Art Deco dreamers were big on novelty and a triangular shaped diamond was a very new idea.

The trillion cut is also called trilliant – a mashup of trillion and brilliant – or the trillionaire cut. It has three flat sides, with an angular cut that leaves plenty of room for 37 sparkling facets. Though the triangle generally has sharp edges and angles, most trillion cuts have soft, rounded corners lending a romantic nature to this cut. As well, the elongated aspects of this cut mean that it appears larger than it is. It’s also an efficient cut since less rough is wasted than for most other cuts.

This shape is unique, so it requires skill to achieve a really excellent trillion cut. This .45ctw trillion cut diamond was shaped by a master craftsperson. Graded E SI1 and set in 22K gold, that smooth, buttery setting is wide and ample, embracing the supple contours of the stone and mirroring its flowing curves.
