What You Should Know: A spectacular Victorian pendant re-imagined from a brooch. The detailing of this piece is just spectacular!

Since before human history, great treasures have resided deep in the Earth’s crust. Humans being the resourceful creatures that we are, have always sought a way to extract these minerals from our planet.

Deer antlers were most likely the first-ever pickaxe. But by Mesopotamian times, we had primitive tools to access ever deeper layers of ground, fashioned from materials like bone and stone. In the Medieval period, we got an even better handle on metalworking, which meant miners had a suite of fancier tools to choose from. Handles were commonly made of wood topped with iron picks. The more we wanted metal, the better the technology for tools advanced. The Industrial Revolution gave rise to many novel wins, including more durable wooden handles.

The miner's pick is an iconic symbol of labor and perseverance. Those who mined for minerals have an irreplaceable place in history. Early miners brought to light stones and materials that pushed industrial progress forward in centuries past and made ours a more and more advanced society today.

There’s much more than whimsy and symbolism to this remarkable pendant. There is clear craftsmanship. The brain behind this treasure—which is reimagined from a Victorian broach—clearly had deep respect and admiration for the workers who supplied those perfect materials that make up this pendant: gold, silver and diamonds. (And we can thank the divers for the cutie little pearl topping this masterpiece).
