The English word for queen is derived from a term for wife—’cwen’. But the meaning of what it is to be a queen has evolved over the centuries. In European history, queens could only rule as a stopgap measure between male rulers—for example if a queen’s husband dies but her son is not yet of age. Eventually queens gained power to rule in their own right but often they had to seize power. Isabella of France had her husband murdered and kept a hold on on the throne even after her son reached was old enough to reign. Today, many royal families have come a long way: the most famous royal fam in the UK changed a law in 2013 to allow women to succeed to the throne.

In addition to her royal scrolling design, this marvel centers the most fantastic example of lapis lazuli. This ultramarine stone has been treasured for millennia, once boasting a higher value than gold. And it was not only considered royal—evidenced by its presence on King Tut’s tomb and other significant places—but holy. People believed it came straight from the gods.

We’re calling all queens to treat themselves like the badasses they are and don this most royal, stately ring, a glorious example of the Art Nouveau period’s skillful and creative use of materials, structure, and beauty.
