Mount Rushmore invites its first guests. The Great Gatsby is published. The first motel opens in the US. And someone with exceptional taste graduates from Benjamin Franklin University in Washington, D.C.

The institution opened its doors in summer 1925 so this lucky grad must have been part of the inaugural class. The school closed in August 1987, melding with George Washington University after graduating around 8,000 students over the course of 62 years. The tradition of the class ring began in 1835, when West Point cadets wore them as a reminder of unity and token of their time at the academy. Today class rings are ubiquitous, coming in many shapes with a multitude of gemstones.

We love the stately profile of Ben Franklin on this hefty honey. But ironically, Benjamin’s will showed he had no love for jewelry. In bequeathing over 400 diamonds to his daughter, he added a provision that she could never make them into jewelry as he believed it would "countenance the expensive, vain, and useless fashion of wearing jewels in this country." We strongly disagree but glad that jewelry craftsmen didn’t boycott all things Ben or we’d never have this extraordinary hand-engraved signet in beefy 14K gold.
