Fidelity is a serious proclamation. It evokes promises of allegiance, loyalty, and devotion. This remarkable Art Deco masterpiece is seriously awesome. From that deep cerulean engraved stone to its bright 14K ornate shoulders and inner shank inscription.

The Art Deco Era was a time of lavishness, luxury and novel pizzazz. But J. Thomson—the former owner of this ring—wanted to demonstrate his or her seriousness; they could not be swayed by the free wheeling good times of the flapper era! Even the choice of engraved chalcedony speaks to an older era of jewelry, during Victorian times, as the stone was quite popular at that time. And even farther back, Chalcedony was used in ancient times as a seal due to its relative softness—for ease of carving—yet firmness, which a 6-7 on the Mohrs scale of harness. J. Thomson was seriously old school.

Chalcedony conjures feelings of benevolence and generosity, transparency and joy. The name chalcedony comes from the Latin “chalcedonius” which is derived from a town in modern-day Turkey. The town roughly translates to “city of the blind”. It was deemed so because the land opposite the settlement of Chalcedon was far inferior to its neighboring town across the river that one Persian general declared the city’s founders must have been blind. Fortunately the stone named after this supposedly lackluster town is anything but!
