In the latter half of the 19th century, gypsy rings became a jewelry lover’s favorite. Stones appeared to be embedded into gold, the setting all but seamless. A cavity was hand carved into a golden band and a precious stone was simply placed inside, creating a flush look.

Diamonds were very secure when housed in gypsy rings, and the thought was that it would detract thieves from robbing upper-class Victorians while traveling if they were wearing such safely set stones. Both men and women adored gypsy rings, typically set with one central stone, or three smaller ones in a horizontal row.

While Victorian gypsy rings are common due to their incredible popularity, we’ve never quite seen one as unique as this stunning example. Hand carved details decorate the golden shoulders, creating swirling, curling lines. These design elements instantly inspired visions of fluffing, fast moving clouds- the ones that appear right before a storm. An old mine cut diamond is set into the gold, held in place by the cloud’s crests.
