On the northern coast of the United Kingdom, around 175 million years ago, trees started to sink into the sea. These pieces of driftwood would be layered with mud and organic matter, and under immense pressure until the Stone Age, when pieces of this follized wood washed ashore. Since then, both tools and adornment have been carved out of the material we now know as jet.

Jet is found around the world but the most durable and shiny jet is found in the seaside town of Whitby, England. Whitby jet jewelry was a favorite of Queen Victoria since she was devoted to increasing British manufacturing. When Prince Albert died in 1861, Queen Victoria ordered her entire court to adhere to mourning dress, including a strict rule of only black jewelry. Jet was the perfect material for the decades lasting trend of mourning jewelry.

This mid 19th century jet piece has been carved into the shape of a shield. Shields inspire notions of protection and loyalty, strong sentiments of the Victorian Era. A symbolic token of security, deep rooted in history. We think its smooth exterior makes this the perfect addition to an antique chain adding a little bit of edge to a classic look.
