In 15,000 BC Egypt, detailed depictions were carved into rocks to record events, daily life, familial connections, and great leaders. These petroglyphs were quite possibly the first iteration of cameos. Centuries later, during the time of Alexander the Great, the ancient Greeks and Romans would idolize gods and goddesses with mythological images carved into shell or stone, and often adorn themselves with these miniature scenes.

The love for cameos and interest in technique for creating them grew during the Renaissance. Religious figures engraved into cameo rings were stacked on the fingers of popes and the prestigious Medici families.

As time wore on, cameo rings grew in popularity while their renderings grew less specific. The Georgian and Victorian Eras offered cameo rings with silhouettes of both men and women. This incredible 19th-century cameo ring has a beautifully detailed profile of a gentleman. The carved agate is in magnificent condition, complemented by the buttery rich yellow gold split shoulders.

We love how casually this ring can be worn, while the man inside is quite distinguished and proper. A perfect balance.
