One the of the most popular gemstones during the 18th and 19th centuries was also one of our favorites- garnets. Of course, the adoration of garnets goes back further in history than that. It is said that the great philosopher, Plato, had his portrait engraved on a slice of garnet. Egyptian Pharaohs wore multiple strands of beaded necklaces comprised of garnets. In Bohemia, the garnet industry was such an illustrious one, the most prevalent profession among the population was directly related to the red gem. They were used for more than just jewelry; magnificent castles and churches had their interiors decorated with garnets.

During the Georgian Era, garnets were most commonly found with thin slices of foil placed behind them in closed back settings. This inventive technique was thought to enhance the color and refraction of the stone. These 18th century earrings perfectly display how alluring foiling garnets can be. The pair boasts flat cut foiled-back garnets, two round and one pear shaped in each earring. The original settings have been preserved while the golden ear hooks were added later. The deep juicy color of each garnet along with the movement the construction allows, gives way to a delightfully beautiful pair of antique earrings.
