While the diamonds on these magnificent earrings date back to the 1700s, the adoration of this style dates back thousands of years. The first evidence of hoop earrings were worn by Sumerian women around 2500 BC. These particular hoops were crescent shaped and molded out of gold or bronze. The same materials were used 1500 years later by the Aegean civilizations, though these hoops were more reminiscent of a tapered boat shape. In ancient Egypt, thick hoops were worn by all genders and required a commitment of stretching your ears. The Greeks and Romans more commonly wore lighter and thinner hoops, wrapped out of wire and often decorated with clusters of beads implicative of floral or animal like shapes.
We have always had a certain reverence for hoops. The style has been important to many cultures across the world and invoke a particular confidence and power when worn. When considering our Georgian Mine Cut Diamond Collection, we knew we wanted to incorporate the sovereignty that hoops have symbolized for millenia. Suspended from either a 10mm or 12mm solid gold hoop is an opened back antique cut diamond, formerly harbored in a forgotten 18th century necklace. We designed each earring to have harmonious juxtaposition: the old mine cut diamond speaking to history and beauty, while the smooth and chic 14k hoop alludes to the modern sophisticated wearer. The energy between the both old and new components is dynamic and thrilling.
