The table cut diamond is considered the first “faceted” diamond in history. During the renaissance, all diamonds were mined in India. Understandably, India kept the stones that were the most coveted shape and size and the more abnormal diamonds were exported to European countries. This challenged stone polishers to get creative and study how manipulating each stone enhanced its beauty. Learning that grinding two diamonds together to fashion a point cut, they took it a step further and used the same technique to cleave off one of the points. This created a flat surface, or table facet, and the table cut was born.

Table cuts were predominant throughout the Middle Ages, but fell out of fashion when cuts that displayed more brilliance were invented. Many antique table cuts have rounded corners or semi irregular shapes due to the handmade nature available at the time. Today, it is extremely rare to find historical table cut diamonds, many of which have been recut into step cuts with more facet patterns.
