Ancient people loved organic adornment. From bones to stones, creativity flourished even when technology did not. Coral is one such organic substance, dating back to at least ancient Egypt, where it was used both decoratively and spiritually.

According to Greek mythology, coral originated as the bloody droplets when Perseus decapitated the feared beast Medusa. Coral was thought to protect children and ward off magic spells, infertility, and temptation. Some even thought that wearing coral made you exempt from getting struck by lightning.

Gorgeous coral can range from a deep red to a pale pink, known as angel skin. Composed of the skeletons of tiny marine invertebrates, coral is commonly found in tropical and subtropical oceans. Coral has such versatility—from carved pieces to beautiful beads—but we most deeply adore a polished coral cabochon, like this fantastic Victorian ring.

Coral has timeless appeal. Pantone named “Living Coral” as its 2019 color of the year. This antique specimen—surrounded by sparkling Old Mine Cut diamonds—is as ‘in’ today as coral treasures were in ancient times.
